| | Singaporean lawyer-turned-hotelier Loh Lik Peng, a recipient of the prestigious Carl F Buchner Trail Blazer award, is known for his jaw-dropping collection of vintage chairs, and anti-stereotypical Hotel 1929, but he has outdid himself with the opening of the New Majestic Hotel. Bursting at the seams with style, the sexy design hotel is a far cry from its past life as a traditional inn cum Chinese restaurant in the Chinatown conservation area, very close to Outram MRT station. Already buzzed about within the creative circles even before its opening day, the New Majestic Hotel lives up to its reputation today, having hit Conde Nast's 10th Annual Hot List and nabbing a string of other accolades. From its pristine-white lobby with colourful hanging glass orbs and original-1928 exposed concrete ceiling, to the individually furnished rooms, everything's so chic it hurts, according to one magazine review. Take time to get to know the four different room types - mirror, hanging bed, aquarium and loft - which feature original site-specific works of local emerging artists. There are also five very special design concept rooms by Singapore's well-known designers. Check out the room with two side-by-side bathtubs! Don't miss dining at Majestic Restaurant, with modern Cantonese cuisine by award-winning chef Yong Bing Ngen. But the highlight must be the manhole view of the swimming pool through the ceiling of the restaurant, allowing you a glimpse of water babies floating past. |
